Transport firm's plan to store 50 trailers in 'quiet and tranquil' former quarry near Oswestry is thrown out
A transport company's plan to use a former quarry as storage for HGV trailers has been refused by Shropshire Council over fears it would disrupt the north Shropshire countryside.
Oswestry transport firm Cadwallader Ltd had applied for permission to store up to 50 HGV trailers on the abandoned Nantmawr Quarry site.
The quarry has been dormant since its closure in 1977, and despite a number of alternative uses being proposed for the site in the 1990s including a pony trekking business and a mountain biking centre, no permanent use for the former limestone quarry has been found.
The site is owned by the Oswestry-based logistics firm, who lodged an application for a change of use for the site in March.
In a supporting statement submitted with the application, the company said it had carried out an "extensive long-term search" for storage facilities - which had failed to reveal a suitable alternative.
It added that the move would reduce pressure on its main premises in Maesbury Road, and lead to "job creation" at the site.
