Severn Trent is currently working to mend the leak, which is understood to involve a water pipe close to the Narrow Boat Inn on Ellesmere Road at Whittington near Oswestry.

Pupils at Whittington CofE (Aided) Primary School had an unexpected day off after the headteacher took the decision to close the school as the toilets wouldn't flush and the kitchen would have been out of use.

Lucy Lightwood, school administrator said: "There has been a major burst water pipe on Ellesmere Road which has affected the school's water supply. We have implemented our contingency plan because we could not flush our toilets or use the kitchen."

She added that the school was in regular contact with Severn Trent to assess the situation.

A spokesman for Severn Trent said: "Customers in the Whittington area of Oswestry may be without water or have lower water pressure than normal this morning. This is due to a burst water pipe on Ellesmere Road.

"Our teams will be on site soon and will be working hard to get this resolved and get the water back on as soon as possible. We're really sorry for any inconvenience caused by this and thank you for your patience."

The leak is affecting properties in St Martins, Gobowen, Park Hall and Whittington.
