Tesco in the town has asked Powys County Council to take away the paper, glass, textiles and cardboard recycling containers after the supermarket saw months of fly tipping.

Warning signs and written warnings from the council have been ignored, with offenders continuing to abuse the site.

Nigel Brinn, head of highways, transport and recycling at the council, said: “We will be removing the community recycling site located at Tesco in Welshpool following a request to do so by the store.

“The site is on land owned by Tesco and they have requested that the banks are removed because they have attracted a large amount of fly-tipping over recent months.

“It is unfortunate that the banks will be removed because of the actions of a small number of individuals.

“Households are able to recycle their glass, paper and card using their recycling boxes and the can take bulky cardboard to their local household waste and recycling centre on Severn Road.

“If any householder is struggling to reduce the amount of waste they put in their black wheeled bin, they can contact our waste awareness team who will be able to provide advice on how they can recycle more of their waste.

“Householders can also request additional recycling boxes if they are required.”
