The woman was seen jumping from the bypass bridge on the A458 on Wednesday.

Police have praised the "courageous" actions of those who helped rescue the woman, who appeared to have escaped without serious injury.

After being pulled from the river she was taken to hospital by ambulance to be checked over.

A spokesman for Bridgnorth Police's Safer Neighbourhood Team said the river had been particularly swollen at the time due to recent heavy rain.

He said: "On the afternoon of Wednesday, the emergency services were called by a number of members of the public who had seen a female jumping from the Bridgnorth bypass bridge on the A458.

"She landed in the River Severn, where water levels are very high.

Ambulance

"The woman was very fortunate not to be seriously injured and was helped from the river by members of the public.

"Fire, paramedics and police arrived soon after and she was taken into the care of paramedics. She was assessed at the scene and then taken in an ambulance for a full check up at hospital. She did not appear to have any serious injuries.

"Members of the public acted courageously to help the lady from the river and are to be congratulated for their actions."

Jamie Arrowsmith of West Midlands Ambulance Service confirmed that they had attended and that the woman had been taken to Princess Royal Hospital in Telford as a precaution.

He said: "We sent one ambulance and a community first responder to the scene.

"On arrival they discovered a woman who had fallen in to some water but she had remained concious throughout.

"She had managed to get herself out of the water and had not suffered any obvious injuries as assessed at the scene and was taken to Princess Royal Hospital as a precaution."

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service had also sent a fire engine to the scene following the initial call to the emergency services.
