Supporting students important role at Shropshire hospital
Supporting students and newly-qualified healthcare professionals is at the forefront of new job roles for three nurses at Shropshire’s specialist orthopaedic hospital.
Debi Clutton, Clare Murphy and Rachel Owen have joined the Clinical Placement and Practice Development Teams at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital and will be collaboratively working together.
All three will be working alongside Jayne Johnson, Clinical Placement Facilitator; and Karin Evans, Practice Development Sister.
Debi, Practice Development Nurse, said: “My role focuses on guiding and supporting newly-qualified nurses and Allied Health Professions (AHPs) in their transition from student to help develop their practice further.
“I love every minute of working in the Practice Development Team and it’s a great feeling to be able to assist newly-qualified staff to develop their clinical skills.”
While Debi will be working with newly-qualified nurses and AHPs, Clare will be working with students who haven’t yet qualified.
Clare, Clinical Placement Practice Development Nurse, said: “This is my absolute dream job – I’ve worked at RJAH for 10 years in a range of clinical areas and I’m looking forward to passing on my clinical knowledge and giving back to the future of the NHS.
“Championing our students is so important to ensure they are well equipped with the relevant and up-to-date clinical skills and knowledge.”
Rachel was redeployed to Clinical Placements throughout the pandemic and has now successfully gained a permanent role as Clinical Placement Support Nurse.
She said: “Education and supporting our students has always been a passion of mine – during my time working on the hospital’s wards I have been an Education Link Nurse and also a Mentor.
“I really believe that every nurse and AHP has a responsibility to support students and to pass on our collective wealth of knowledge and experience.”
Jayne said: “I am thrilled that we have expanded the team – it means that as a Trust we will be able to provide our nursing and AHP students with valuable clinical placements. We’ve recently expanded our partnership working with universities, meaning we will be able to host more students at RJAH.”
Karin added: “One of our main objectives in Practice Development is to focus on the Nursing and Midwifery Council Educational Standards for future nurses. This means there are now more clinical competences that need to be completed before a nurse can qualify, so as a team we will supporting our pre-registration nurses through this.”
Stacey Keegan, Chief Nurse and Patient Safety Officer, said: “I am delighted we have expanded the team who are working alongside our students and newly-qualified staff.
“These healthcare professionals are the future of the NHS and it’s great that they will be further supported and championed throughout their training and into their qualified roles by Debi, Clare and Rachel.”
