Shining success for our lambing day

Well, spring is upon us, and lambing at the college has just about finished for another year!

I always look forward to lambing time - and I always look forward to it finishing too.

On April 2 we held our annual Lambing Day. The gods were kind to us with a glorious sunny day and bumper numbers turned up to visit Walford. I always think these events, although very stressful to organise, are so important in engaging the public with the college and the farming community in general.

I would like to say a big thank you to all our suppliers who kindly lent us equipment for the day. Without this support it would not be as successful as it was.

Driving tractors nowadays is so different to even 10 years ago. Some of them are so complex, and with this in mind students recently had a day at Walford when Kubota supplied from Hughes Bros of Oswestry and Vicon brought in a tractor with GPS navigation. This technology aids farmers to accurately map fields to the inch as well as aid in making sure fertiliser and sprays are distributed evenly and to areas that require more, or less.

This technology is here to stay and develop further, so for students to get first hand experience of this was invaluable. A big thank you for all concerned.

The summer show season will soon be upon us so we hope to see you at all are local events across the county.
