Making a difference to hard pressed farmers
The generosity of people giving their time and effort supporting a function raising funds for the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution is amazing, writes Christine Downes is chairman of Shropshire RABI committee.
The National Farmers' Union annual charity lunch was held at the home of Mr and Mrs Bruce Udale, who hosted the first lunch 21 years ago. This year, 300 guests enjoyed a delicious meal, met friends and supported an auction for donated items. The final amount raised will be of great benefit to farming people in financial difficulty.
Many strive to cope but RABI is there to help with domestic finances, giving advice with compassion and confidentiality.
Someone phoned the free phone number 0300 303 7373, concerned about a neighbouring family. With children to support and a farm bringing in little income, finances were at breaking point. The family eventually agreed to see the regional welfare officer, who identified that they were entitled to state benefits. The officer helped with the claim, and identified that extra training with the Gateway Project would help the farmer. The family has gained in confidence and is now looking to a happier future.
The Gateway Project pays for people to train so that they can get additional off-farm work to supplement their main income. One young man trained in tree surgery and is now employing five people.
The Shropshire committee is grateful to those who volunteer to raise funds and awareness of the charity. This month Heulwen Charles was zipping through the air on the longest wire in Europe at Bethseda with sponsorship from those whose who admire her courage.
