Tim, who farms at Longnor, near Shrewsbury, won the trophy from the Organic Milk Suppliers Cooperative (OMSCo) along with £500 spending money.

But, although he said the money could be well used on the farm, he has been ordered to take his long-suffering wife, Louise, out for a meal instead.

Mr Downes fought off competition from across the country to scoop the highly-prized accolade which recognises best practice in organic dairy farming.

Judges said Tim was chosen for his progressive approach, support for the local community and dedication to organic principles.

Tim said: "I'm chuffed to have won this award, although I'd like to pass on my thanks to our talented staff, whose dedication and hard work have been integral to making our farm a success.

"Louise, my dad, Andy, Simon and Dave put their heart and soul into this place and without them we could not have done it.

"I could find 101 things on the farm to spend the money on, but the organisers have said I've got to take Louise away for a night and splash out on a nice meal.

"It was our wedding anniversary recently, so I think we could both do with a treat."

Rosie Palmer, for OMSCo, said: "We felt Tim deserved the recognition. He has made a huge contribution to organic dairy farming, working diligently to maintain organic integrity and ethics."

Tim is holding his next open day on June 1, from 2-5pm. Everyone is welcome to enjoy the trailer rider, nature walks and farm demonstrations.
