Ploughers preparing for match
This year's Cruckton Ploughing Match takes place on September 16 and will be hosted by Maurice and Aisla Jones of Court Calmore, Montgomery. The match has been chosen by the Society of Ploughmen as the regional qualifying competition for vintage and classic ploughing.
The popular spectacle of human ploughing will make a welcome return. Teams of up to 15 will compare their skill with that of the more conventional methods of horses and tractors.
The event also has the added attraction of Jim Reynold's and his dancing horse. Jim will give a demonstration before the prize giving in the afternoon.
World Champion horse ploughman Jim Elliott, who until recently lived near Montgomery, has agreed to judge the horse ploughing this year. Jim is now working his horses at the Beamish Museum in Durham.
Also new at this year's match is a prize for the best static trade stand. The Stiperstones Brass Band will be there to entertain visitors throughout the afternoon.
Cruckton secretary Mrs Helen Davies said: "We are indebted to the farmers who generously offer us the use of their land. We make every effort to minimise the inconvenience and we hope that our hosts enjoy their involvement with the society, but we do recognise that they have to make a big commitment to fit us into their arable rotation.
"Such is the current success of the match that we need approximately 100 acres in one block, which isn't always easy to find but we are lucky to have offers of sites for the next few years."
Ploughing starts at 10am. Entry is £5 for adults, £3.00 for seniors, children and parking free. Further details are available from the secretary, Mrs Helen Davies telephone (01938) 590535 or 07976 803066.
