Firefighters were delayed getting to the scene of a suspected house fire in Market Drayton – because badly parked cars were blocking a road.

The crew, based in the town, had to wait for people living in Frogmore Road to come out of their homes and move their vehicles before they could reach the house further down the road.

It later transpired an electrical fault was behind the alarm being raised shortly after 7.30pm on Saturday and that there had been no major fire.

A spokesman for Market Drayton fire station said: "We appreciate that people like to park as close to their property as possible, but please think could a fire engine or an ambulance get through the gap that you have left?

"If this incident had have been a fire situation, the valuable time lost in getting our equipment to the scene could have made a big difference.

"Our colleagues from West Mercia Police attended the scene and were informed of the poor parking situation.

"Remember delays to a fire engine or ambulance getting to the scene of an emergency can cost lives."
