Work has got under way on essential repairs at the multi-storey car park at Telford's Southwater – leaving it shut off completely for motorists all this week.

Engineers moved in yesterday to start work on the car park.

The first two floors are expected to re-open next Monday, with the rest of the car park opening a couple of weeks following that.

The top two storeys of the car park have been shut off since a mystery car fire in the middle of June.

The blaze caused damage to the car park's lighting and electrical wiring and resulted in a number of parking spaces being taken out of action.

Workers this week will also be laying an electricity mains cable from Southwater Way to the new development at the front of Meeting Point House.

Western Power Distribution (WPD) will be laying down a new underground mains cable which will run between Southwater One and Cineworld through to the new building at the front of Meeting Point House.

This work is expected to take between three and four weeks and will see small sections of paving being dug up in order to minimise disruption during the school holidays.

Jonathan Rowe, Telford & Wrekin Council's director of customer, neighbourhood and wellbeing services, said: "We'd like to thank people in advance for their patience while both these pieces of work take place. The WPD work is the laying of the electricity supply to the development at the front of Meeting Point House.

"This development was agreed after the original ground works for Southwater were installed.

"The multi-storey car park requires some essential works following last month's car fire before it can re-open.

"And this will mean that the car park has to close for a week to allow this to take place."
