A5 closed near Oswestry after car hits viaduct railings
Shropshire's A5 was closed to rush hour traffic today after a car hit railings on a viaduct in the early hours.
The car hit the viaduct crossing the River Ceiriog north of Oswestry.
The accident happened between the Gledrid and Halton islands of the A5 shortly before 1am.
One person involved is believed to have suffered minor injuries.
The road was closed to motorists in both directions while the condition of the bridge was assessed by engineers and was still shut to traffic during the morning rush hour.
Motorists using the route were diverted along the B5070 through Chirk and Gledrid.
Officials at the Highways Agency have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
A spokesman for the Highways Agency said that the diversions were put up for motorists travelling between the village of Gledrid and Chirk using the B5070.
He said: "My understanding is a car hit the bridge railings over the River Ceiriog."
He said the incident was now being investigated.
A spokesman from the Welsh Ambulance Service said there was just one casualty involved in the collision who had suffered minor injuries.
