College flags up distance learning courses

More than 20 free distance learning courses are available at Shrewsbury Colleges Group.

The courses are available for anyone over the age of 19, and allow people to take part with flexibility to fit around their own commitments.

Courses usually take between two to four months to complete, and have flexible start dates, so people can enrol at any time of the year.

Shrewsbury Colleges Group alumni Sarah Hodnett, owner of Beauty by Sarah, who has been taking part in a course, said the distance option had fitted in with her work life.

Opportunity

She said: “With one in four people being diagnosed with a mental health problem, I feel it is important to learn more about mental health.

"I am halfway through my course and already I have a greater understanding of mental health and mental ill-health. Distance learning works very well for me. During the lockdown, whilst my salon was closed, it was important for my own mental wellbeing to have the opportunity to learn remotely and since returning to work, studying at home fits in with a busier schedule.”

Caroline Thornton, team leader for distance learning at Shrewsbury Colleges Group, said: “There is no requirement to attend college, so these courses can be taken by people living across certain parts of England and over the border into Wales.

“Those taking part will gain a nationally recognised Level 2 Certificate and feedback is always provided to ensure people have the support they need to succeed. Reading materials and assessment paperwork are provided to enable people to study independently. There are no exams, just assessments and work is paper- based, so those taking part don’t even need access to a computer. It’s a really flexible way of learning.”
