Biochemistry lure for students at new university in Shrewsbury
Biochemistry and sport management might not have much in common but they are proving popular with potential students of Shrewsbury's new university.
University Centre Shrewsbury is set to open in September and as it takes applications for its 2015 intake it has lifted the lid on the courses which have received the most interest so far.
Although biochemistry and sport management are leading the way, banking and finance are also seeing a considerable take-up.
The development would transform the empty office block, which adjoins the Market Hall, with four of the studio apartments adapted for students with disabilities.
A strategy will also be drawn up after concerns from town residents that whole areas of Shrewsbury could become dominated by undergraduates.
Shropshire Council is in the process of creating a policy for the university to ensure that the "right amount of accommodation of the right quality is provided".
Paul Kirkbright, University Centre Shrewsbury deputy provost, said: "We are still receiving applications but the most popular courses to date are biochemistry and sport management, followed by banking and finance, English, medical genetics, geography, business studies and history."
Mr Kirkbright also refused to be drawn on an election pledge from Labour leader Ed Miliband to cut the tuition fees cap for universities from £9,000 to £6,000.
He said: "We are listening to the election pledges with interest and considering the potential outcomes."
Any move to cut the cap would affect University Centre Shrewsbury which has elected to charge the maximum £9,000 a year for undergraduate courses.
Professor Tim Wheeler, vice-chancellor of the University of Chester which is working in collaboration with Shropshire Council in running the university, said: "Fees will follow the standard model operated my most universities in the UK, with fees for undergraduate courses at £9,000 per year.
"Fees do not need to be paid upfront and a range of student loans and financial support is available."
