Future of Shrewsbury college site is undecided
The future of a college in Shrewsbury that is more than 100 years-old remains "undecided" after it was revealed it is to lose its use.
Radbrook College, which is part of Shrewsbury College of Arts and Technology, will no longer be attended by students as of the Autumn term.
As of September, students attending the college just off Radbrook Road will instead start at Shrewsbury College's London Road campus, which has seen thousands of pounds worth of investment in recent years.
The Radbrook site dates back to 1901. It is part of Shrewsbury College but owned by the charity Radbrook Foundation, and currently offers apprenticeships, vocational, and part time qualifications.
The move is part of a more "inclusive" programme for students who will all attend lectures under one roof, and a spokeswoman for Scat has admitted that it is "the end of an era."
It has not been confirmed whether Radbrook will shut down altogether though, and trustee of Radbrook Foundation Mr Christopher Yaxley said the future of the site was "undecided".
The implication for staff at Radbrook is also not yet known, and Mr Yaxley said any future plans are still confidential.
Catherine Armstrong, Assistant Principal for Operational Development, was also unable to comment on the future of Radbrook, but thanked the charity for their continued hard work over the years.
She said: "We have spent around £15m on re-developing Shrewsbury College at London Road over the past few years, including the latest phase which involves anew commercial, industry-standard hair and beauty salon called Evolve and associated training salon being built.
"We are also developing a new Health & Social Care and Childcare suite, new student learning centre and student common and relaxation areas, which will all be ready for the new term.
"It is the end of an era for Shrewsbury College study at Radbrook from September, as we bring all of our students together at one campus to offer a more inclusive feel and facilities which will enhance the student learning experience.
"The College is grateful to the Radbrook Foundation, who own the Radbrook site, and we will continue to work on our links."
