More than 120 delegates, including about 30 MPs, gathered at Westminster yesterday to discuss issues facing the 40 lowest-funded authorities in Britain.

It was organised by the F40 Group, of which Shropshire Council is a member. The F40 Group says rural areas have been unfairly disadvantaged by the current funding system for nearly two decades.

Shropshire Council's rural portfolio holder, Councillor Cecilia Motley, said Shropshire was one of 32 authorities of "particular concern". "We are 140 on the league table of 152 local authorities for funding," she said.

A promise of a new national funding formula was made by Education Secretary Michael Gove 12 months ago.
