Mr Sanderson is the Environmental Champion winner in the Shropshire Star's Pride of Shropshire Awards.

But Mr Sanderson had been unable to attend the awards evening held at Shrewsbury Town Football Club recently to collect his prize, so the paper's deputy editor Mark Drew presented the accolade to him at the school.

Pupils at Ladygrove Primary School in Dawley, Telford, nominated Mr Sanderson for his work in turning them into environmentally aware young citizens.

The school not only has a wind turbine, and solar panels, but also has ducks, chickens and sheep.

The pupils of each class are also responsible for a section of an allotment in the school's grounds.

Feeding the ducks at Ladygrove Primary School, Dawley, are Jordan Thomas, nine, Harry Beamson, eight, Harry Abbey-Barnes, nine, and Ilania Knowles, nine. Youngsters at the school also keep chickens and pigs.

Nine-year-old Ilania Knowles, who is on the school's eco committee, said of the school's headteacher: "He really deserves the award because he makes learning so interesting."

On receiving his award Mr Sanderson said: "It was a real surprise and an honour. I had no idea I would be nominated.

"None of this is done by me alone. I have a very good team around me."

Mr Drew said: "It is remarkable what Mr Sanderson has achieved at the school.

"The children have great enthusiasm and that is shown by the fact they nominated him for the award, which is richly deserved."
