The Priory School, on Longden Road, has been given the highest rating possible by Ofsted inspectors following an assessment in June.

The glowing report concluded that "almost all" of the school's 815 students make outstanding progress throughout the school.

It also pointed out that the behaviour of students and their attitude to learning was "usually exemplary".

Up to 40 lessons were monitored by inspectors at the secondary school, which converted to an academy in June 2012.

And inspectors concluded that "outstanding leadership has developed and sustained high quality teaching."

The report added: "School leaders, together with the governing body, have a clear view of how well the school is performing and what it needs to do to improve further".

It also said: "Students say that bullying is rare and they feel safe in school. They are very well cared for throughout the school's outstanding pastoral care system.

"Attendance is well above the national average. Students say they enjoy coming to school."

The report also praises the quality of teaching which it says is "consistently high".

It says that teaching assistants are "successfully used" in class to support students in their learning.

Headteacher Candy Garbett said everyone at the school was delighted with the report.

She said: "The report's overall judgement that The Priory School is outstanding is testament to the work of the governors, staff, students and parents who work together to create a stimulating and vibrant learning environment.

"Indeed the outcome is proof of the success of our school motto 'In pursuit of excellence – together we can make it happen' – because we have!"

The report added that much of the marking was of high quality but that some did not give students enough information on how to improve their work.

To celebrate the positive judgement, students enjoyed an extended break with cakes and drinks.
