The West Mercia Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) John Campion has sanctioned £1m to fund new police vehicles to replace existing ones that are "no longer fit for purpose".

The PCC says the money will fund new police vehicles to "increase the visibility and accessibility" of officers and improve responsiveness to incidents. The investment will also replace existing cars and vans that are no longer fit for purpose.

It will also support the recent introduction of five first-of-a-kind Neighbourhood Crime Fighting Teams, which are part of the PCC’s commitment to build a more secure West Mercia.

John Campion said: “After delivering on my commitment to increase officer numbers to the highest level in West Mercia’s history, it is vital that the force is equipped with the resources it needs to carry out their roles efficiently and effectively.

“As PCC, I recognise the importance of having police officers visible across communities which is why I have committed to this investment. It also allows the force to be responsive across the large, geographical area of West Mercia.”

Rachel Hartland-Lane, West Mercia Police director of business services, said: “This is a much-needed and welcome investment from the PCC which I know will make a significant difference to our officers as we boost our fleet.

“With this money we will be able to buy new vehicles and replace some of our existing fleet so that we can continue to deliver an excellent service to our communities.”
