Daniel Elliott admitted using a kitchen knife in the attack on Edward Arnold at the home of his former partner after he saw them on a night out in the town and clashed with them.

Elliott, 27, of Beatrice Street, was jailed for six years and two months.

He also admitted slashing a sofa and bleaching the clothes of his ex-girlfriend at her home.

Elliott broke into the flat by removing a window after he met the two earlier that evening, when they were part of a group socialising on the night of October 26 last year.

A group Elliott was part of came across the others in an alleyway near the Boars Head pub in Oswestry, Shrewsbury Crown Court heard.

When Elliott noticed his former partner, who had recently ended a relationship with him, he began shouting abuse at her and calling her names. The groups eventually separated but both went into the Boars Head.

Katie Fox, prosecuting, said that Mr Arnold later went up to the bar at the pub and the defendant began “goading” him. A scuffle broke out, and they were both asked to leave.

Later, at about 3am on October 27, the woman, Mr Arnold and another friend went to the flat.

“They realised a ground floor window had been smashed and a frame torn out,” said Ms Fox.

"Mr Arnold went in first. He saw this defendant run towards him with a kitchen knife raised towards him pointing to his face.”

Intervened

Mr Arnold tried to stop Elliott and the two ended up on the floor, before the latter raised his knife.

“He managed to turn so the knife instead went into his left upper arm,” said Ms Fox.

“Mr Arnold put his thumbs into the defendant’s eyes, and Miss Collins intervened by pulling the defendant off Mr Arnold.”

Elliott was pulled off the victim and left the building before Mr Arnold was taken to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, where he was given stitches to his wounded arm. His pleural cavity was also damaged.

Elliott was found at about 4.30am hiding in a vehicle outside his mother’s house.

Gerry Bermingham, defending, said Elliott had taken cocaine that night and his actions were the result of “drink, drugs and jealousy”.

Judge Peter Barrie sentenced Elliott for a section 18 offence of wounding with intent, and a concurrent two-year sentence for burglary.

He told him: “It is clear that if Mr Arnold had not managed to run out of the way you might be facing a far more serious situation.

“Fuelled up by bitterness and anger, you went to her flat and you broke in by forcefully removing a window so that you could climb in.

“The three came home, you focused on Mr Arnold and you still had a kitchen knife on you. You ran at him clearly intent on assaulting him with the knife, and that is what you did.”

Elliott will also pay a victim surcharge.
