West Mercia Police has confirmed they are reviewing policing arrangements for a number of big events in the county in the wake of the Manchester attack.

The move comes as part of Operation Temperer, which allows for the military to be deployed under the police command "to release officers across the UK to support the wider national response".

Martin Evans assistant chief constable of West Mercia Police said that although there is no specific threat against the region, the policing of large events is under review.

He said: "As you would expect, we are reviewing our activities, including those in crowded places and for pre-planned events and whilst at this time there is no intelligence to suggest a specific threat in Shropshire and Telford we are continuing to provide a visible policing presence to offer reassurance to our communities.

"We have an established plan in place if it is necessary to manage the deployment of military personnel in Shropshire and Telford and our security measures and activities are under constant review to reflect where the threats exist and the level of threat we are facing in the county."

Shropshire is set to host several large events this weekend with thousands of people expected to attend.

Shrewsbury will be staging the Shropshire County Show, an 80s music festival, and the annual Cycle Grand Prix. Ironbridge is also hosting its Second World War weekend, while Market Drayton will be staging a Rock & Bowl Festival and Bridgnorth will be putting on the Sun Fest.

Inspector Ed Hancox, chairman of Team Shrewsbury and Safer Neighbourhoods Inspector for Shrewsbury and surrounding areas, said armed patrols would be taking place to reassure the public.

He said: "We feel it is important to emphasise that there is no specific intelligence relating to any threat to the communities in Shrewsbury and we regularly review our security measures to ensure we are doing all we can to keep you safe.

"We are reviewing security measures in place for events in Shrewsbury this coming weekend.

"Please also note that there will be additional armed patrols across Shrewsbury. You may have already noticed an increased presence in the town centre, which we hope is providing reassurance to the community and our partners."
