Andrew Guy, 45, was handed the sentence at Shrewsbury Magistrates' Court on Monday after he was caught on on CCTV attempting to steal the products from the B&M Bargains store in Market Drayton.

He was spotted by the manager on September 6 putting the cans into a carrier bag he had brought into the store before attempting to leave without paying.

Guy, of Beechwood Court, Longlands Lane, Market Drayton, was stopped by the entrance of the store as he attempted to leave and threw the carrier bag containing the deodorant at the manager.

Prosecutor Becky Jones said: "The cans were recovered and were fit for resale."

Stephen Scully, for Guy, said his client realised he had committed an 'offence of stupidity'.

He added that due to a previous heroin addiction, Guy suffered from deep vein thrombosis in his left leg, rendering him unable to work.

Mr Scully said his client had been clean of drugs for two years but would be unable to carry out any unpaid community service that may have been ordered by the court because of his medical condition.

He added that Guy would not cope well in prison.

"He is somebody who struggles in custody and has to have daily medicine.

"He accepts he has been stupid. He admitted that in the police station and he admits it today," he said.

But chairman of the magistrates Anthony Wakenshaw said due to the nature of the offence and Guy's past as a persistent offender a custodial sentence would be given.
