A top price of 8,000gns for the rising 11 month Limousin heifer, Winnington Fiona, led the Important Reduction Sale of the Winnington Herd on behalf of Messrs JS Vance & Son, Upper Grimmer Farm, Minsterley, Shrops held at Shrewsbury auction Centre on Saturday 4th June, 2011.

Continuing the strong demand for Limousin females amongst pedigree and commercial producers alike, 27 in-calf heifers from Messrs Vance averaged £2,325 with 38 maiden heifers making £2,015 apiece.

Leading the day's trade was the youngest female in the catalogue, the July 2010 born maiden heifer Winnington Fiona. This smart young heifer is by the French-bred herd sire, Verdru, and is out the homebred fourteen-year-old cow, Winnington Narcisse, a daughter of the noted Ronick Hawk. Purchasers were Mr & Mrs N Matthews, Pye Brook Farm, Sutton, Stanton Lacy, Ludlow for their newly established Poolehall prefix.

The Objat-sired Winnington Esteem, a nineteen-month-old heifer out of the Ryedale Paragon daughter, Winnington Beatrix, and from the same cow family that bred Winnington Trumps, realised 5,000gns when going under the hammer to the Roughley Herd of Walter Smith Farms, Chase Farm, Weeford Rd, Roughley, Sutton Coldfield.

At 4,000gns was the in-calf heifer, Winnington Enigma. Scanned in calf to Garnedd Cymro, this January 2009 born heifer is by Nebulon and out of Tunnelby Thumbellina. This heifer now heads to the Bassingbourn pedigree herd of RF Turner & Son, Bassingbourn Farm, Fordham, Ely, Cambs who bought a further two lots at 2,800gns and 2,000gns respectively.

Heading the male section of the Winnington consignment was the 5,200gns Winnington Elite, a September 2009 born son of Objat and out of the Nebulon-sired Winnington Buddleia. Purchasers were Messrs R&B Rochelle, Bromley Farm, Bridgnorth, Shrops.

The Sale also featured a Reduction Sale from the Tunnelby Herd on behalf of Miss EH Thompson, Beechwood, School Lane, Onneley, Nr Crewe. The top price of 4,000gns was achieved by a cow and calf unit comprising the 2007 born Tunnelby Carietta, a Ramses daughter and out of Tunnelby Henrietta, who was sold suckling her November 2010-born bull calf, Tunnelby Fable, sired by Hafodlas Abel, the Saphir son who bred the 20,000gns Tunnelby Cymbellene (Carlisle, May 2009).
