Bishop's Castle Meat Ltd in Love Lane Industrial Estate, Bishop's Castle, is one of the town's largest employers with 16 staff.
It recently shut temporarily due to foot and mouth restrictions but bosses have now decided not to reopen.
Local MP Philip Dunne said companies director, Colin Kinmond, has confirmed he is seeking a buyer to take on the business.
Mr Dunne, whose family farm used the abattoir for lamb supplied through the local Marches Quality Meat co-operative, said: "It was the only firm able to take cattle, sheep and pigs in Shropshire."
