Up to two million tubs of low fat spread made at a factory in Shropshire are being recalled after they were contaminated by mould.
Manufacturer Dairy Crest says tubs of Clover, produced at their factory at Crudgington, near Telford, have been affected. It is thought the recall could cost the company up to £1 million.
The company ordered the product to be removed from supermarket shelves and asked consumers to return tubs sitting in their fridges.
It ordered the drastic action after 17 people complained of feeling sick after eating the spread.
Production has been stopped at Crudgington. The company fears several hundred tubs have been accidentally mixed with a mould most commonly found in blue cheese such as Stilton. A spokesman for the company said: "As a responsible manufacturer we are recalling all tubs.
"It's impossible to know exactly what the number of tubs affected is.
"Some mould got into the manufacturing process and into the product which has led to this situation where the product goes off before the end of the shelf life.
"People are getting a sometimes strong and sometimes unpleasant blue cheese flavour."
The company has apologised to any consumers who have been affected.
However, the spokesman said the factory does not produce blue cheese and it was unknown where the mould originated from. All sizes of tubs are affected, as well as all best before dates up to August 10 inclusive.
Customers have been advised to dispose of the contents and keep the lid to claim a refund.
Advice for customers has also been posted on Dairy Crest's website. Concerned customers are advised to telephone the company on 0208 288 2008 or e-mail consumer@clover.org.uk
The on-line information says: "When you e-mail or phone us, please can you let us know your name, address including postcode, the size and number of tubs of Clover that you have purchased, and the codes on the lid of each tub." Customers can also write to the Clover consumer care manager, Clover, PO Box 215, Telford, Shropshire TF6 6WB.
