Peter Rhodes on re-writing Brexit, re-dating Christmas and rumours of disaster in Albert Square
The UK was in the European Union and its predecessor organisations for 47 years. No-one ever claimed we got the relationship right.
So why should we pretend, less than five years after quitting the EU, that we have the proper post-Brexit relationship with it? This is why I see no harm in Keir Starmer's government government haggling with Brussels to win a few minor tweaks.
But the key word is “minor.” If there is any truth in reports that he is creating a “surrender squad” to take the UK back into Europe and “trash our independence,” then I make this confident prediction: The British electorate will be so outraged that they will vote in their millions for Reform UK. Labour's hopes of a two-term government will crumble into ashes as the key to 10 Downing Street is handed to Nigel Farage. Tread softly, Sir Keir, for you tread on their Brexit.
