Wellington pensioner rescued from kitchen fire

A pensioner had to be led to safety from her Wellington home due a kitchen fire.

The woman was helped from the property, in Hiatt Avenue, yesterday afternoon.

Emergency crews used breathing gear and water to tackle the kitchen blaze when they were called to the scene at about 2pm following reports that someone was inside.

Three crews based at Telford Central and Wellington fire stations and an operations officer went to the scene where she was given first aid and oxygen until paramedics arrived.

West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesperson Claire Brown said: "We got a call a 2.02pm and an ambulance and two paramedics attended.

"We accessed one patient, an elderly woman who was treated at the scene and who didn't require hospital treatment."

Shropshire Fire & Rescue Service stated: "This incident involved a fire caused by cooking. One casualty rescued and left in care of ambulance."

The firefighters left the scene at about 2.15pm.
