William Bye, of Red Barn Road, died when the silver Honda Civic he was a passenger in left the A529 near Market Drayton and went down an embankment at about 5pm on November 27.

The opening of the inquest at Shirehall yesterday heard the car collided with a post, fence and hedgerow.

Shropshire coroner John Ellery was told a section of the fence entered the car through the passenger side and hit Mr Bye in the head.

He was rushed to Royal Stoke University Hospital but the resuscitation team said his injuries were non-survivable and he was pronounced dead at 9.50pm the same day.

A cause of death was given as a penetrating brain injury after a road traffic accident.

Mr Ellery adjourned the inquest until a further hearing at Shirehall on April 11.
