Delays after caravan crash closes one lane of A5 at Shrewsbury
Motorists were caught up in delays this afternoon after a lane was closed on one of Shropshire's busiest roads due to an accident.
A Ford Mondeo towing a caravan was involved in a one-car accident at just after 12.30pm on the westbound carriageway of the A5 near Shrewsbury.
The white caravan collided with the left hand barrier which runs parallel to the road, causing extensive damage to both the barrier and the rear of the caravan.
No one was injured in the incident although the barrier was left in need of urgent repairs.
One lane of the A5 was closed in the direction of Oswestry while the work was carried out.
West Mercia Police's Operational Patrol Unit was on the scene to deal with traffic build up and direct motorists.
A West Mercia Police spokesman said: "We were called at 12.40pm to reports that a Ford Mondeo car towing a caravan has been involved in an accident on the westbound carriageway of the A5 between Emstrey Island and the Dobbies roundabout.
"The caravan had collided with the barrier which runs along the verge of the road. There was a lot of damage to the rear end of the caravan and also to the barrier.
"Luckily there were no injuries and no other vehicle was involved in the accident."
The caravan was removed from the road and contractors from the Highways Agency were called to undertake repairs to the barriers. One carriageway of the road was closed to traffic while the emergency repair work was carried out. The other lane was left open allowing motorists to carry on with their journeys.
Hoowever, officers said there had been reports of cars driving up the slip road the wrong way on the A5 following the incident.
