Drink-driver crashed into Telford central reservation as 'cry for help'
A mechanic who crashed his car into the central reservation of Telford's Eastern Primary while drunk did so as a cry for help, a court was told.
Despite the damage and loss of a wheel, Darren Bond continued to drive to his home in Trench where neighbours called the police after seeing the smoking Lexus IS200 arrive in the driveway.
Mrs Abigail Hall, prosecuting at Telford Magistrates Court, said police were first alerted by a member of the public who said they believed they were following a drunk driver as Bond returned home just before 1am on October 14.
Police then received a call from one of Bond's neighbours in Woodhouse Crescent who believed that the defendant had just arrived but had been in a collision.
When officers arrived they saw "extensive damage" to the front of the car and could see that the defendant, who was stood outside, was "clearly intoxicated".
Bond gave a reading of 112 micrograms of alcohol in 100ml of breath – the legal limit is 35.
He pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol.
Mr Paul Nicholas, for Bond, said that the incident was "a cry for help" and "for the best" as the defendant had suffered "a build up" in mental health problems brought on by a custody battle.
The case was adjourned until November 25 for the preparation of a report.
