At an event at the Royal Opera House in London, the Market Drayton-based yoghurt manufacturer was announced as a sponsor of the event, enabling it to use Team GB-related marketing until the end of 2016.

It will also allow the company to offer "experiences" with the team as prizes on its packs.

Müller Dairy managing director Bergen Merey said: "We have a long history of making great products in Britain with milk produced by British dairy farmers for people who love yoghurts and chilled dairy puddings throughout the UK, and exciting plans for the future. Working with Team GB is a natural fit for us and gives us an excellent opportunity to underline our commitment and ambition to excellence in Britain as we look ahead to Rio in 2016.

"Müller is a dairy company with the will and persistency to win, the drive to succeed as a team, and the ambition to achieve the best results – traits we share with Team GB – and Team Corner, Team Müllerlight and Team Müller Rice look forward to supporting Team GB on their journey to Rio in 2016."

Athletes attached to Team GB will be selected to support the campaign soon, with possibilities including big names such as Mo Farah and Jessica Ennis, who excelled at the last Olympics.

Lord Coe added:"Müller is a market-leading brand, and we are delighted they are an Official Partner for 2016.

"They will provide significant support in engaging our Olympic loving nation in the build-up to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games."

The manufacturer will also sponsor a programme of live events around the country in the run up to the games.

Major brands will be clamouring to make use of the name of Team GB in their branding in the run-up tot he next Olympics, especially given the profile achieved at the last games, London 2012.

Muller's deal represents a significant coup for its marketing team, and will allow it to make use of the one of the most high-profile sporting events on the planet.

British Olympic Association chief executive Bill Sweeney added: "We are thrilled to welcome Müller to our family of Team GB Partners. Müller is ambitious and committed to its further development in Britain, and fits very well with our own Team GB values.

"The partnership also fits with our desire to work with partners committed to activating their association with Team GB through consumer programmes."
