Fire crews spent more than two hours cleaning up the fuel at a lay-by on the A53 in Market Drayton from about 1.15pm. They also took steps to stop a nearby watercourse from being contaminated.
The lorry driver heard a loud noise while travelling round the roundabout and then realised he was leaking fuel. It is thought something may have hit the fuel tank causing it to puncture.
The crew from Market Drayton fire station, used Environment Agency equipment to stem the flow and absorb the spillage to stop it from getting into a watercourse.
The spillage was dealt with by 3.40pm.
