Shifnal Carnival has been hailed as a huge success after hundreds of people gathered on the streets to welcome a parade of floats.

Residents, businesses and local good causes rallied together to enter floats into the carnival procession that set out from Admirals Close.

Dancers, drummers and musicians marched through the town as the judges and families gathered to watch from the streets. The overall winner chosen was the 1st Shifnal Scouts for their "under the sea" themed float, while Newpool Construction scooped the comedy trophy for their "I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here" themed entry.

Angela Rockell has helped to organise the event for more than 20 years – and she said Saturday's event was bigger than ever before.

She will step down as carnival chairman ahead of next year's event and thanked residents, businesses and charities for their support.

She said: "I'd like to thank everybody who was involved in the carnival – the committee, volunteers, businesses and supporters. Hopefully everyone will continue to support the event. We felt there were a lot more people on the streets watching than previous years, which is great. We had the funfair in the town on the same day and it was a real community event."

Money raised from the event, collected from float entries and the street collections, will go towards running the event and then dished out to local good causes.

Tributes were paid on the day to the late Mary Lacey, who served on the carnival for many years and passed away after a long illness last year. Mrs Rockell said: "Mary was a lovely lady and it was her who got me into joining the committee all of those years ago.

"This year has been really successful. Thank you to everyone who came along."

The amount raised from the event will soon be counted.
