The crash happened on the A529 at the Sweet Appletree crossroads at around 3.45pm yesterday.

Police said a silver Renault Megane was travelling towards Market Drayton, approaching the crossroads, when it was in collision with a small skip lorry.

The front passenger of the Megane, an 80-year-old woman, died at the scene. The Megane's driver, an 81-year-old man, was taken to hospital in Stoke with significant injuries.

The driver of the lorry, a 42-year-old man, sustained minor injuries.

Police want to hear from anyone who witnessed the collision or the circumstances leading up to it. Those with information should call police on 101, quoting incident 388S of Tuesday, May 5.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "When crews arrived, they found the elderly woman, who was a front seat passenger in the car, in cardiac arrest.

"They immediately started life support, but despite their best efforts it was not possible to save her and she was confirmed dead at the scene.

"An elderly man who was driving the car suffered serious chest injuries with suspected multiple fractures.

"Due to his condition, he was taken by land ambulance to the major trauma centre at the Royal Stoke University Hospital.

"The car had suffered significant front and rear damage. The skip lorry had front end damage.

"The driver of the lorry was out of the vehicle when crews arrived. He had a minor head laceration but did not want to go to hospital."
