Quacking fundraiser for Shropshire group
You would have been quackers to miss this racing event held at a Shropshire farm.
The duck race was organised as part of a Shropshire village's effort to win a Britain in Bloom prize.
It was the idea of volunteers who form part of the Norton in Hales Bloom Group, based near Market Drayton.
The ducks were released at Forge Farm, which sits on the River Tern in Norton in Hales, with money raised being used to order blooms and bedding plants.
Nigel Passmore, of Norton in Bloom, said the event was a great success.
He said: "Luckily the sun shone to help the enjoyment.
"Many local people, young and old, joined in with the fun at this ever-popular village event.
"There were six races with eight ducks competing for cash prizes for the first three over the line in each race.
"The new waterfall feature provided extra spice to the races.
"There was also a very popular paint-a-duck competition for children."
In addition, on the day there was a raffle and a tombola with many prizes, donated by Norton residents.
Refreshments were served throughout with a barbecue as well as cakes baked by members of the bloom group.
The event raised vital funds towards costs to assist Norton's bid to attain the coveted Champion of Champions award in this year's Royal Horticultural Society Britain in Bloom competition.
Last year it won the village category for the third year. Mr Passmore added: "Britain in Bloom awards are presented to communities who display excellence in its horticultural achievements, environmental commitment and community involvement throughout the year.
"This year, Norton in Hales' theme is 'Greener for Life'.
"Many new initiatives are ongoing and planned to demonstrate our commitment to impressing the judges who will visit the village in August."
Mr Passmore said: "Our members are attending regular meetings and weekly work parties to ensure that the village retains a beautiful aspect throughout the year."
The whole village gets involved in the Britain in Bloom effort, with the aim to outdo other rivals across Shropshire.
The award winners will be announced in October.
