Michael Walls, 28, had also punched and kicked the woman during the attack in September, 2013.

He had been due to face trial at Shrewsbury Crown Court but changed his plea and admitted a charge of assault causing actual bodily harm.

Walls, of Dodmoor Grange, Randlay, was given a 12 month prison sentence suspended for two years.

Recorder Gareth Evans said it was clear Walls had been upset, believing his girlfriend had been unfaithful.

He said there had been pushing and shoving between them and he accepted the defendant's basis of plea that injuries caused by the knife were not deliberate. The court heard the incident happened around 4am on September 28, 2013 after the woman returned home after a night out, leaving Walls to babysit their three young children.

Walls had punched her on the back of the head and had been waving a knife, which caused cuts to her hand and arm that needed several stitches.

Miss Sally Hancox, for Walls, said her client was seeking help for mental health and anger management issues.

She said the couple now had a stable relationship and a fourth child had been born since the incident.
