Football fans boost pub chain's growth in Shropshire and Mid Wales

Football fans' thirst for ales drove a 10 per cent growth in sales for Marston's during the World Cup from both off-licences and supermarkets, new figures show.

The brewery, which owns scores of pubs in Shropshire and Mid Wales, reported that customers ate fewer meals in its pubs during the football tournament, but made up for it by higher sales of its beers.

The Wolverhampton-based company, now runs around 1,800 pubs and six breweries across the country, employing 13,000 people.Chief executive Ralph Findlay said: "We have continued to make good progress."
