Seventy-five new homes given go-ahead in Shrewsbury
A controversial housing development in Shrewsbury has been given the go-ahead - despite fears that it may cause gridlock in the town.
Plans to build 75 homes at Ellesmere Road have been approved by planning officers, following an ongoing investigation into contamination on the site.
Councillor Dean Carroll, Shropshire Council's representative for the Bagley ward where the development will be built, said he believed the plans would not have been accepted prior to the Government's five-year-land supply policy impose don local authorities. He had previously said that his ward was already full to capacity.
He said: "I am disappointed and I had grave concerns over this site.
"But these are really difficult circumstances and plans which wouldn't usually go through have been accepted.
"We aren't in normal times any more and you've got to remember that.
"There were 24 letters of objection and I had concerns myself."
The proposals, which include four and five-bedroom homes, saw dozens of objections flood in from residents, with concerns over traffic in the area.
There were also questions raised as to the need for air vents on the site, and the decision was previously delayed by planning officers following a call for further reports.
Concerns were also raised about added pressure on school places and the effect the site may have on what is considered to be a rural area of the town.
