The plans by the new owners of the Wenlock Edge Inn, in Much Wenlock, could also include a new car park.

A derelict building will be demolished and an outbuilding will be transformed into a shop. The plans for Easthope village also include a meeting room and a sewage treatment plant.

The Wenlock Edge Inn was voted The Good Pub Guide Pub of the Year in 2002 but had remained empty for 12 months before being taken by the current owners, Longville Arms Ltd, in March 2013.

Anthony Craig, of A C Craig Associates, on behalf of the applicants, said the development was vital. "Overheads are too large and you have competition from supermarkets, so pubs need further income from somewhere."

But Judith Goodman, who lives next door to The Wenlock Edge Inn, at Hill Top Farm, said she was against the plans. She said feared the visual impact of "American-style motel buildings".
