Market Drayton fundraiser braves a leg wax for charity

That's got to hurt – but at least the pain brings with it some gain for charity.

Ashley Dodd, shop manager of Cancer Research UK, in Cheshire Street, Market Drayton, let customers pull off his hairs.

But they were forced to dig deep for the good cause before being given the satisfaction of inflicting pain.

He said: "The whole point of it really was to raise awareness of the charity, and let people know about our shop here in the town.

"It came about when one volunteer said that as I was the manager, I really ought to be the one to get my legs waxed. I couldn't really argue with that, but I was dreading it for a while.

"We decided that anyone who donated £5 could pull a strip themselves, and the volunteers also talked me into a bit more.

"They decided that the first two people to donate £10 could wax my armpits – I had people hoping they'd be the one to do that for weeks.

"Now we've completed this fundraiser, we really want to do some more, and we'll be looking for new ideas to raise money from now on."

The shop exclusively sells children's items, which Mr Dodd said is not known by many shoppers. Mr Dodd said: "We've been a children's charity shop for nine or 10 months now, but people don't seem to realise so we thought the leg wax would be a good way of letting people know."

The fundraiser hopes that it will also highlight their urgent need for donations and volunteers.

He said: "Many of our volunteers are parents or grandparents and work just one morning a week.

"A few hours can make a huge difference; no matter how much time a person can give we'd be delighted to hear from them."

The shop will announce the total fundraised during the week, but ask people to continue to make cash donations when they can, along with any stock. To volunteer or donate call (01630) 655848.
