Corner Farm Equestrian, Petton, near Ellesmere, is holding an open day on Sunday to encourage more people to get involved with horse riding.

Anyone of any age will be able to come and meet the 12 horses used for lessons, as well as take part in quizzes, and watch the riding displays by instructors and students.

Lucy Johnson, owner and instructor, said: "We want to encourage more people to take up a new sport, get more active, and use horse riding as the great fitness activity that it is.

"It's a great day out. We hold one every year and usually get about 50 or 60 people coming.

"There'll be a barbecue and refreshments, and the students are doing a themed show this year, which we're keeping a surprise!"

With the recent success of Britain in the 2012 Olympics, the centre has seen a definite increase in involvement.

"I think it's got people more interested in the sport," said Mrs Johnson. "A lot of people want to learn about dressage after we won the gold, so it's good to see it got more people involved in it."

The free of charge open day, running from 11am-3pm, will let anyone aged four and upwards sign up and book their first lesson for just £10.

"Usually, half an hour children's lessons are about £22, so we're giving people a great deal, I think," said Mrs Johnson.

The club, which also runs a Mums morning, believes people can start riding at point in their life.

Mrs Johnson added: "I don't think it's true that you have to start really young, our mums' morning teaches women how to ride, and they never rode as children, so it just shows any age can do it."
