The fifth l took competitors over farmers' fields and up to the top of Lilleshall Hill.

The event was organised by Newport & District Running Club with funding from Shropshire Homes.

Money raised by the runners will go towards an outdoor climbing wall for Lilleshall Primary School, which will also be opened up to the wider community.

The race is mainly off-road and uses tracks and paths not normally open to the public and the later stages of the run meanders through the village and goes through the 11th century village churchyard.

Prizes were on offer for the first three men and women over the finish line, as well as a slate coaster for all 10km entrants.

Goody bags were also on offer to everyone who took part in the fun run and shields were awarded to the first girl and boy from each school year group.

The first to finish the 10km race was Joe Brocklehurst from Shrewsbury Athletics Club with a time of 35 minutes and 37 seconds.

The Lilleshall Monumental has raised more than £6,000 for a number of community projects over the last four years.

On the day, for non-runners and runners alike, there was a barbecue and a bar as well as cake and hot drinks.

Last year the popular race was postponed due to heavy snow, but the weather this year was kinder to organisers.

The Mothering Sunday event started with a fun run at 10.45am, followed by the main 10km challenge at 11.30am, starting from Lilleshall Cricket Club in Church Road.
