Bollard request to block lorry parking in Newport
Councillors have demanded action to stop delivery vans and lorries parking on pavements in Newport town centre.
Members of Newport Town Council want a bollard installed to stop vehicles pulling up onto The Square, at the junction of St Mary's Street and High Street.
Councillor Phil Norton told a meeting of the council last night: "All we need is a bollard there. Telford & Wrekin Council need to get off their backsides and put it into force. We have got to say we are not accepting this."
Councillor Tony Forrester said: "They say it's got to be an open space for markets and so on, but how are they going to do that if there is a lorry parked there? If they just put a litter bin there it would solve the problem."
Councillor Tim Nelson said a removable bollard was needed so that cars could pull up onto The Square when absolutely necessary. He added: "There are experts at Telford & Wrekin Council. They should be telling us what is needed, not the other way around."
