Work on Shifnal Carnival is already under way
Preparations are already under way for the annual Shifnal Carnival, after the event was saved by an influx of new volunteers.
This year's carnival is set to take place on June 28 after people in Shifnal had been warned that last year's event might be the last one because of a lack of members on the organising committee.
But now 10 new members have stepped forward to join the committee, an increase from the six already signed up. Work has started to organise this year's event, with the annual Carnival Queen and Princess selection disco set to be held on Saturday, March 8, from 6.30pm to 9pm at Shifnal Youth Club.
The princess and her attendants must be at least six years old on, or before, carnival day and the queen and her attendants must at least 14 on or before the day.
Local groups and organisations are also being urged to get involved by entering a float, and committee members are on hand to offer assistance with ideas and resources.
Entry forms for floats will be available from Katrina's card shop and committee members from mid March.
The new members came forward after an emotional appeal at the annual town council meeting last year by carnival chairwoman Angela Mullett in an attempt to, once again, save the popular annual event.
The appeal also went out successfully through social media sites Facebook and Twitter.
She said: "We have a new stronger committee to take the carnival forward.
"There is a lot of work to do in organising an event of this size but, with additional people, we can now spread the workload.
"New people bring fresh ideas and that is what the committee has been looking for."
The committee will also be launching its brand new website very soon.
Last year's carnival proved to be a huge success despite the fears over its future. Thousands of people took to the streets in summer sunshine to watch the parade, which included 13 colourful floats and featured the Birmingham Irish Pipes and Drums band and samba band Oya Batucada.
A street collection during the day's festivities has raised £1,300 towards carnival funds.
The event had also almost folded in 2012 because of a lack of volunteers.
