Tributes paid to former Shrewsbury vicar who ran retreat at his home
Tributes have been paid to a former vicar who turned his Shropshire home into a spiritual retreat used by thousands of people.
The Reverend Francis Palmer died at The Uplands nursing home, in Shrewsbury, on January 28, aged 84.
The Oxford-educated former Diocesan Missioner of Lichfield was forced to take early retirement after an operation on his spine in 1989, which left him wheelchair-bound. He moved to the Old Vicarage in Claverley, with his wife, Mary, where they lived for 23 years.
Mrs Palmer said: "Though he was not the vicar we used the house for retreats, study days and for individuals who wanted a quiet day, to relax in the beautiful surroundings of the house, garden and countryside.
"They were very happy years and 4,128 people used the house while we were there. He also helped take services in Claverley and joined the choir for special occasions.
"There were also times when I drove him to preach at other churches.
"He was an active participant in various disability advisory groups but failing health meant that three-years ago he moved to The Uplands."
Mr Palmer is survived by his wife Mary, daughters Rachel, Ali and Sarah, and five granddaughters.
A cremation service will be held at Telford Crematorium on Monday, at 2pm, followed by a Service of Celebration and Thanksgiving at All Saints Church, Claverley, at 3.30pm.
It is family flower only but donations will be taken for Christian Aid at both venues.
