It's -12C, the snow is four foot deep – welcome to Shrewsbury, American-style.

The snow is four feet deep in Shrewsbury . . . Massachusetts. The region has experienced its worst weather in 20 years.

As we suffer through our damp January, spare a thought for our counterparts across the Atlantic.

Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, has experienced the worst weather for 20 years, with temperatures regularly dropping below zero, writes Ellie House.

School is cancelled and several people have been killed on the icy roads, which routinely freeze overnight.

Shrewsbury resident Steve Levine today described the weather as "bizarre". He drove 1,000 miles through the snow to reach his stranded teenage son Dan, who was on a school field trip in Ohio and was stuck because flights were cancelled.

The estate agent said: "Ultra cold temperatures have gripped the nation, it isn't even safe for students to wait for the school bus. We've had blizzards everywhere."

Steve says Shrewsbury, USA, has the same community spirit that Shropshire's Shrewsbury has shown during floods. He said: "We pull together as a community."
