Shropshire's Lord Lieutenant leads area's New Year Honours

Shropshire's royal representative heads the list of county voluntary workers and campaigners to receive awards in the New Year Honours list.

Algernon Heber-Percy, the Lord Lieutenant of Shropshire, has been knighted.

Sir Algernon becomes a member of the Royal Victorian Order, KCVO, which recognises distinguished personal service to the Sovereign and members of the Royal Family, and remains in the personal gift of the Queen.

He is joined on the list by a clutch of community stalwarts from Shropshire who all receive an MBE.

Jackie Brookes, from Moreton, near Newport, has been rewarded for her work with the women's rights organisation Soroptimist International and for the community in Staffordshire.

Also receiving an MBE is Peter Corfield, from Ludlow, who is recognised for his services to the town and particularly the Friends of Ludlow Hospital.

Lady Veronica Cossons, the president of Shropshire Wildlife Trust, receives an MBE for her service to wildlife conservation.

She follows her husband Neil on to the honours list – he was the first director of the Ironbridge Gorge Museums Trust and was knighted for services to museums and heritage in 1994.

An innovative approach to helping drink and drugs addicts to get back on track has earned a Bridgnorth man an MBE. John Home is the owner and director of Willowdene Farm Rehabilitation and Training Centre at Chorley, which helps rehabilitate offenders in land-based training programmes.

In north Shropshire, Patricia McLaughlin, a director of the community interest company All Together Ellesmere, was nominated for services to tourism and to the community, and coach John Roberts has been recognised for services to athletics and the community in Oswestry, especially with Oswestry Olympians athletics club.

Two south Shropshire women have been awarded the British Empire Medal for work in their communities.

Janet Brandon is recognised for her services to Ratlinghope, where she was postmistress for 20 years, and community groups, and Pat Harding was nominated for her work in Clunton, near Craven Arms.

In Mid Wales, Evan Maldwyn Evans receives the BEM for service to Adfa and Cefn Coch, while Ivor Hawkins was nominated for his service to the community in Pontrobert and Dolanog.
