£50,000 grant for Shifnal Cricket Club to improve pitches
Shifnal Cricket Club has received £50,000 to improve its pitches.
The club will complete underground work to allow it to collect rainwater from gutters on the pavilion roof to then be used on the cricket square.
An artificial cricket pitch in the outfield will be moved following the grant from Sport England's Protected Playing Fields scheme. And Shifnal European Junior Football Club will begin a ground share at the Priorless Road venue, in a bid to increase its own membership.
The club was one of 97 sports projects across England to receive a share of the £5.5 million funding.
Peter Houlston, chairman of the cricket club, said: "The overall purpose of the project is to improve the quality of the outfield, maximise the area available for junior cricket coaching and extend the use of the field for junior football matches in the cricket off season.
"We are delighted Sport England has approved funding to help us address problems with our outfield.
"The funding will enable us to remove banks and undulations across the entire area with the long term objective of matching the quality of our outfield to the quality of our award-winning cricket square and recently refurbished and extended pavilion.
"The outfield improvements are the culmination of a five-year development plan, which will enable us to grow and sustain junior cricket activities and increase women's and girl's participation in cricket.
"The project also enables us to welcome Shifnal European Junior Football Club as a partner at our Priorslee Road ground in the knowledge that providing them with a permanent base will help them grow."
