The A5 was closed for around five hours yesterday and diversions set up following an accident between a car and a lorry that led to an oil spill on the road.

The crash happened near the junction with the B5009 at West Felton just before midday, but disruption continued into the evening rush-hour with delays of up to 30 minutes.

The driver of the car, a Land Rover Freelander, was treated for injuries at the scene but did not need to go to hospital. The driver of the DAF articulated lorry was not hurt.

Pragati Baddhan, of the Highways Agency, said: "The road had to be closed and a diversion was put in place, directing traffic down the old A5.

"Oil had been spilled and we sent a hydro blaster to clear up the carriageway.

"The clean up began at around 4pm with all carriages clear at around 5.10pm."

Drivers also faced rush-hour delays following a separate accident involving two cars in Babbinswood, near Oswestry, at around 4.20pm.

Two fire engines from Oswestry and a rescue tender from Telford were called after one car came to rest on its side.

Firefighters required cutting equipment to free one man from his vehicle who required medical treatment from paramedics at the scene. The other driver was uninjured.
