The branch in Ludlow's Tower Street will also be open on Sundays for the first time.

It will be shut for a week at the end of October for a revamp, and bosses have promised a more open-plan layout when it reopens on November 1.

The post office, and all its services, will be open then from 8am to 8pm, Monday to Saturday, and from 10am to 4pm on Sunday. Its current opening hours are 9am to 5.30pm from Monday to Friday and 9am to 12.30pm on Saturday.

Adrian Wales, Post Office regional network manager, said customers would be able to use post offices in High Street in Clee Hill and Gravel Hill in the town during the short closure.

He said: "We understand how important having a post office is to residents in the area and we are confident that this modern service will meet the needs of the local community and secure services for the future.

"The modernisation is part of a major investment programme to convert the post office network to new-style branches and this investment marks a commitment to no more branch closure programmes."

The news of extended opening hours has been welcomed by Ludlow MP Philip Dunne.

He said: "The changes to Ludlow post office are part of a three-year investment and support programme which will see half of the post office network converting to the new style of branches.

"Longer opening hours and a more customer friendly layout will help sustain the post office and make it more practical for use by residents of Ludlow and the surrounding area.

"The Government is committed to maintaining rural postal services and safeguarding post office branches is a vital part of this programme, so I am pleased that the post office is committing to this investment in Ludlow."
